Braces Q & A

Do crooked teeth always need to be straightened?

Ideally, yes. Having straight teeth is about more than improving your appearance. Teeth that aren't properly aligned can cause problems with your bite that can eventually cause jaw inflammation and tempomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), as well as uneven wear patterns that can increase your risk of decay. Crooked teeth can also be more difficult to clean properly, providing crevices where decay-causing bacteria can hide. Gum disease may also occur more frequently when teeth are not aligned properly, and that can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Are metal braces my only option?

No, today there are many options for straightening teeth, including ceramic braces that can be much less obvious than traditional braces, as well as braces that are applied to the backs of teeth (lingual braces) and removable orthodontics like Invisalign®. Most braces can treat most alignment issues, including overbites, underbites, crossbites and gapped teeth, but there are subtle differences that can make one treatment better than another, depending on the existing issues and other factors. The best option for treatment can be made following the initial evaluation, which will likely include x-rays and a careful examination of your bite pattern to identify any underlying issues that might be contributing to your alignment issues.

How long does treatment take?

Most patients can be treated within about two years, with some milder cases requiring a year or so and some more complex cases requiring more than two years. An approximate duration for your treatment can be provided once the initial evaluation is complete.

Will I need to wear a retainer?

Yes, wearing a retainer is an important part of aftercare for most patients, helping to ensure the bones and other structures that surround and support the teeth are fully remodeled and stable once the braces are removed.
